As a single property owning lady for many years who is the product of very smart parents this has allowed me to bring certain assets to this relationship. I was lucky enough that my father took the time to teach and he is always just a phone call away to guide me through any problems I encounter when I try. I was able to replace all the lighting fixtures in my condo, the bathroom sink, fix the toilet and my talents at times have also extended to auto repair. There was no one else to fix it and I am cheap, so I learnt to do it myself. One of my favourite Dad 911 moments, I was replacing the dining room fixture and you are supposed to have three wires with one of them being green to go to ground, I open up the fixture and I have a different colour wire but he talked me through it. Car moment when the car wouldn’t start it wasn’t the battery, might have been the alternator but his advice before I tow it to the garage, replace a certain fuse. I purchase the fuse, replace it, get a jump start and the car ran fine. It was a five dollar solution, instead of a thousand dollar solution at the garage.
Fast forward to last night we were faced with a dilemma, water dripping from the ceiling again. It started over the weekend when we had the kids and we thought we had a problem with the sinks. The plumber came Monday morning and found a leak under the sink after cutting a hole in the ceiling downstairs. Here we are again a few hours later and water is pouring out of the ceiling. We are trying to recreate the problem and come to the conclusion it must be the shower because that is when the water started after the middle child took a shower.
That night, unsettling thoughts as we knew this was going to be an expensive fix and might I add we only have one tub/shower combo in the whole house. The previous owner put up one of those Magic Bath solutions; therefore access to the pipes is going to require removing/destroying that. I am truly terrified to see what is behind the magic bath. Before heading to bed we are contemplating a major rush bathroom renovation without knowing a good contractor.
The plumber promises to call us back in the morning to let us know if he can come and we decide to test our theory in the morning. My other half jumps in the shower and I am down stairs on bucket monitoring detail. He showers, no drips, he uses the sink, still nothing. Then I had a bright idea, the problem started when one of the kids took a shower so maybe the problem is with the caulking in the tub as water would hit the back wall with them and not us. I head upstairs to test my hypothesis and I was right, water comes pouring out of the ceiling. So instead of the problem costing thousands it can now be solved with a six dollar tube of caulking. One good star for me, the second gold star is for re-caulking the bathroom on my lunch hour today. Problem solved. Logic and minor home repair knowledge prevail.
My mother gifted me the gardening. This is the first year that I have been able to test out this skill now that I have a backyard. I have managed to grow a sunflowers from seeds, and plant the front flower garden.
Every Franglo needs a frog, who may one day become her prince oh wait I already found mine….

I am happy this is behind us, I have enough stress in my life trying to learn another language. Happy to report that I have passed the level 3 beginner French class, my immigration to Quebec is coming along nicely.
